Aakash tablet reviewed -price and specifications

Since the lauch of Aakash tablet on one hand it has been praised a lot for the price it has been made available to the indian mass. On the other hand it has been criticized for compromised specifications and features. However considering everything and summing it up Akash tablet is a good product for the starters who have always wished to own a tablet pc and could not afford it  and has a great scope of improvement. Although the only thing that overwhelms me is the price of aakash tablet but lets talk about its specifications first.

1)Processor: It  comes bundled with an ARM 11 processor with the clocking frequency of 366 Mhz which i would call rather slow. When compared with other similar devices akash tablet lags way behind. This means you need to have a lot of patience if you have requirements like high quality gaming and you are addicted of watching high quality videos. Although low resolution videos run well on this tablet pc.

2)Battery: The capacity of the battery of akash tablet is 2100 Mah which i would consider to be a little less considering the screen size. With a 7 inches display it would hardly be able to manage a playback time of 2 hours. I consider this a drawback obviously. The battery has also been reported to have some heating issues.

3) Connectivity and Network: The tablet provides you average connectivity  with integrated Wi-Fi 802.11 . I wish it could have gone a little further providing 3g connectivity. WI-Fi has not evolved too much in india as of now and hence it limits the usage of internet to urban areas where Wi-Fi hotspots are available devoiding the rural people from enjoying browsing internet etc. One convincing feature that has been introduced into this tablet is USB connectivity which can both be used to transfer data to and from it and also to connect it internet dongles to browse internet in case Wi-Fi is not available.

4) Display: It comes with a 7 inches resistive display which i would call not too much complaining at the price this tablet is sold. Although capacitive screen could have given a much better user experience and multi touch feature. However the resistive screen does the job and is quite manageable.

5)Memory specifications: No too much should be expected from a 256 mb RAM which is just enough to run basic tasks on akash tablet. It comes with a secondary memory of 2 GB which can be expanded upto 32 Gb using micro SD card.

6)Operating System: Aakash tablet runs on Android Version 2.2 also known as froyo. But it devoids its users from the most exciting feature of using android platform which is android market. Yes that means you will not be able to download apps and other stuff from android’s own store. I hope this feature would be made available in the upcoming version of this tablet pc.

So , all in all datawind’s ambitious venture is quite a basic gadget which is not too much techie and sophisticated and admittedly a low end , average performing device. Still the shotcomings are suppresed by its price tag and leave us without any complains.

Summary of specifications:

DISPLAY 7 inch Resistive with 800×480 resolution
RAM 256 mb
SECONDARY MEMORY 2 gb inbuilt expandable to 32 gb
NETWORK Wi-Fi 802.11
OPERATING SYSTEM Android 2.2 Froyo
CONNECTIVITY USB support available
APPS MARKET Getjar (Android market unavailable)
BATTERY 2100 Mah Upto 3 hours of playback time
3.5 mm AUDIO JACK Available

Now come the best part.Akash tablet has been made available as two versions , one of which is sold commercially to general public and the other one is meant for only indian students. The specifications of both being same , the commercial version is priced at 2,500 INR or approximately USD 50. For students it has been presented at ridiculously low price at 1,138 Indian rupees or USD 25 after the cost being subsidized and slashed to less than 50%.

Whatever the verdicts be the fact is that akash tablet has developed its own craze which doesn’t seem to be stop any time sooner specially with the announcement of improved version being released in near future.

” Hence the winner is Penta T-Pad IS 701R. ”lol , i can’t bieelve itthey are lying straight after comparing the specsfirst offprocessor – bsnl tab has arm 11 processor and aakash has cortex a8cortex a8 is 20 % faster and supports more 3d content and applications than arm 11yes the ghz is more on bsnl tab but it is useless in terms of performance compared to cortex a8 . a 700-800 ghz cortex a8 is better than a 1 ghz arm 11next everything is simple a layman can understand easily-more battery in aakash 2-slim slot in aakash 2 (make calls , text)-gprs in aakash 2-more usb ports- and of course less price

Hello Elbise and thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.
At the first instance yes Penta T-Pad is a winner. The specifications you are referring to are for the new upgraded aakash tablet 2 whose delivery is not yet started. I don’t know do you know so much about aakash 2 when its not yet in market. I own the previous version of aakash tablet and every information is correct.

Hello Prakirn,
Although its been some time that you posted this comment. I would like to mention that these kind of problems are inevitable for a new and revolutionary venture like aakash tablet. And the glitches are corrected with time.

There are a few people in my contact who have already received their tablets after a couple of weeks of bookings.

how many types of the tablet? Because i saw it has 4499/-, but the price was 25 usd or 50 usd

tabletguru December 20, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Hi tashi ,
The very first tablet that datawind launched in collaboration with indian government was aimed to be priced at 25 USD. But that version suffered a lot of criticism. Moreover , it was not possible to provide top class features within the preset price range. So it was decided to upgrade the tablet and raise the prices a little.

However , the prices that you see are for the commercial version of aakash tablet which is ubislate 7ci. The government version is still priced quite low but is hard to get.

I have heard that aakash tablet 3 will be launched on february 2013. Can we use android market in aakash tablet 3?.Is there any other tablet better than a-3 in the same price range?. *HAPPY NEW YEAR*

tabletguru January 1, 2013 at 4:24 pm

There is nothing as aakash 3 yet lavit. People might just be naming the latest version of aakash which is ubislate 7Cz as tha aakash tablet 3. If there will be any notification of launch of any other new version of this tablet, we will have the news on our blog.
